Leader #1: Claire Ratinon
Claire grew up in a metropolitan environment and collected many plants while living in a small apartment. She desired to grow vegetables without an outdoor garden. She has sought to start growing plants wherever she could; from raised beds in East London Elementary schools to a summer spent taking care of thousands of plants in a vacant parking lot. Later, she went on to installing pollinator responsive plants in subway stations to nurturing organic salads in a small site in Hackney.
Claire has confidence that if you want to grow your own food, it is possible even in the city without a traditional garden. She clarifies, “You might not achieve self-sufficiency, but you will experience a pleasure of nurturing a seed into a plant that ends up on your plate. It is simple but a humbling process. It’s not always easy but needn’t be too difficult.”
She explains that nurturing plants has steered her to not only enjoying delightful vegetables, but has been a stepping stone to improved mental and physical well-being. Making connections with those that grow our food and developing a profound respect for the process has been an incredible benefit as well.
